Why?

Here is a list of 5 areas where your life could be improved with a digital device:
  1. Health and Wellness
    > Telemedicine: Enables virtual doctor visits, reducing the need for travel.
    > Medication Reminders: Apps and smart pillboxes help seniors stay on track with prescriptions.

  2. Social Connection
    > Video Calling: Apps like Zoom, FaceTime, and WhatsApp help seniors stay in touch with family and friends.
    > Social Media: Platforms like Facebook allow them to stay connected and engage in communities.

  3. Safety and Security
    > Smart Home Devices: Voice assistants (e.g., Alexa, Google Assistant) can control lights, locks, and alarms.
    > GPS Trackers: Helpful for those with memory issues or dementia.

  4. Lifelong Learning and Entertainment
    > Online Classes: Websites like Coursera, Udemy, MasterClass or YouTube offer learning opportunities. Even college classes!
    > Streaming Services: Netflix, Amazon, Brit Box, AMC, Spotify, Pandora and others provide entertainment and music.
    > Games and Puzzles: Digital games help keep the mind sharp and are fun! Crosswords, Soduku, Brain Teasers and More!

  5. Everyday Convenience
    > Online Shopping: Groceries, prescriptions, and other goods delivered to your door.
    > Order Food Online: Order and arrange to have it delivered from Door Dash or others.

How Does the Program Work?

It's easy to participate!  Here's how in four easy steps:
  1. Go to the online Store and "buy" a device (actually checking it out - cost is $0) OR you can call Lisa at (651) 642-1127 and talk to her about what you are interested in.  (Lead time is two weeks - so plan ahead!  If all devices are checked out it may be longer.)
  2. We will schedule a time when you can pick up your device (or if needed - for it to be delivered).
  3. We will schedule a time when the device coordinator or a volunteer can meet with you and show you how to use your device (not required, but recommended); they will also give you contact info in case you need technical support.  Technical support can be done over the phone or in person.
  4. Start using your device!  You will be able to have it for up to 90 days.  Time depends on wait lists and demand.

Need some extra help with your device?

An organization called DOROT out of NYC has put out some great manuals to help you with your tablet, phone, or computer.  This is what they have to say:

"Our lives are better when we can stay connected to our family, friends, community and services. With a little help from family and friends, older adults can learn to use their tablet, smartphone, or computer to increase their social connections and access to vital resources.

Created by DOROT program experts, Tech Guides contain step-by-step instructions on how to use tablets, smartphones and computers for things like Zoom conferencing, check e-mail and so much more!  New guides are added occasionally - so check back if you don't see what you need."

If you are an older adult interested in being matched with a COMOConnects volunteer Tech Coach, please reach out to us at:
